Civil Defense Amateur (Ham) Radio
I have just started learning about Gonset Amateur Radios for civil defense use. So I'm going to let the people at RACES do the talking for me, for now.
Gonset Civil Defense Amateur Radio history
WHAT IS EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT? As presented on the Montgomery County RACES net on 13 May, 1997
by Lyn, WA3RRK
I wish to express my sincere thanks to several of you for the positive comments which were given me for last week's presentation on Taking Care of Ourselves.
In my continued efforts toward safety considerations and being a proactive mitigator, I have prepared another presentation querying "What Is Emergency Management?"
Many of us have a lot of grey in what hair we have left and remember the old CONELRAD radio system which operated on the "AM Broadcast Band" at 640 and 1240 kilocycles. Kilocycles and not kilohertz those days! It was linked with the CD or Civil Defense program which stemmed from the blackouts and air raid drills of the Second World War and continued through the Korean War and into the early 1960's. Gonset, a prominent radio manufacturer in the post-World War II era, sold a lot of bright yellow painted radiosets which were placed in the Civil Defense troves. These were generally based on the Gonset Communicator series radios of that era and were AM only as Single-Sideband or SSB was just an upstart system. These quote-unquote "treasures" are still found occasionally at hamfests and in the reserves of some Emergency Management groups. Today, they have little value in emergency management, but often the group can't "let go".

Civil Defense on Amateur Radio Today
During times of diasater, amateur radio operators have always served their community by providing radio communications when normal communications such as telephone, broadcast radio and government radio systems were impaired or disabled. One of the organizations of amateur radio operators assisting in this emergency communications on Oahu is RACES (Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services). RACES, a national organization, founded in 1952, operates mostly at the local and state level to assist government communication needs during disasters. In Hawaii, RACES has been active for more than 20 years. On Oahu, more than 100 amateur radio operators, from all parts of the island, have registered with RACES and are ready to assist, if needed, for emergency communications.

National NCX-5 Mark II SSB/CW/AM Five Band Transceiver
This rig offers plenty of power for those DX contacts on SSB or CW! Also operates on AM if that is your liking! Originally used as a CIVIL DEFENSE rig. The "CD" stickers are still attatched on the side as seen in the pics. This is the National NCX-5 Mark II SSB/CW/AM five band transceiver. It operates on 80/40/20/15/and 10 meters. Not a Gonset radio, but still helped civil defense stay alive. |

Allied Radio Knight Kit C-560 Tranciever
I just won this radio at an auction on eBay July 28. I hope to get it working and turn it in to a civil defense amateur radio. |
